How to Install Open Visual Traceroute 1.6.3 on Ubuntu 16.10/16.04

    Open visual traceroute is a free and open-source graphical traceroute tool, available for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows. It can also perform packet sniffer and Whois lookup. Data is presented in a 3D map which can be exported to an image file and text file. The gantt view is useful to analyze network bottlenecks.



Open Visual Traceroute 1.6.3 Changelog:
  •     Add max number of hops for traceroute
  •     Add hostname filter for sniffer
  •     Improve embedded traceroute accuracy
  •     Add log windows to show application logs
  •     Add settings to hide non selected labels from the map
  •     Dynamic config to be able to update external content (ip address provider, geoip db location) without having to release a new version of the app
  •     Expire the geo ip db every month and download the latest version to avoid having the db getting outdated when the application is not updated.
  •     Add startup information to the splashscreen, refactor the startup flow
  •     Fix a bunch of UI bugs
  •     Fix a bunch of labels.

Installation instructions:

    Installing Open Visual Traceroute on ubuntu is not very complex process, first of all make sure to install Java on your Linux system, Open Visual Traceroute needs java as pre-requisite , run following command to install java on your ubuntu system.

Install Oracle Java 8 on Ubuntu

Open terminal from Unity Dash, App Launcher, or via Ctrl+Alt+T keys. When it opens, run below commands one by one:
 

$ sudo apt-get purge openjdk*

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java

$ sudo apt-get update

$ sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer

To set Oracle Java 8 by default, do:

$ sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-set-default

   Install Open Visual Traceroute 1.6.3 on Ubuntu 16.10/16.04

    run below commands one by one:

    32Bit OS

$ sudo apt-get install gdebi

$ wget https://sourceforge.net/projects/openvisualtrace/files/1.6.3/ovtr_1.6.3-1_i386.deb

$ sudo gdebi ovtr_*.deb

    64Bit OS
$ sudo apt-get install gdebi

$ wget https://sourceforge.net/projects/openvisualtrace/files/1.6.3/ovtr_1.6.3-1_amd64.deb

$ sudo gdebi ovtr_*.deb

 After it’s installed, you can start this graphical networking tool in Unity Dash or application menu.
